Olympic College
Poulsbo, Washington
Olympic College in Poulsbo, a satellite to the main campus in Bremerton, is envisioned as a "campus in the forest." Located on a wooded, 20-acre site, the campus plan creates a facility that enhances the site's natural features, and takes advantage of its varied topography. This included preserving much of the existing vegetation in both wetlands and forested areas. Generous buffers surround the site, and large swales within the parking lot are planted with native vegetation to help clean storm water run-off. Drawing upon Scandinavian and northwest architecture, the building's forms and natural materials also help tie it to the site. The campus plan is organized along a central "spine" running east-west on the site, with a twenty-foot grade change through the center. A large central stairway reaches from the main parking lot to the upper campus, providing a focal point for both the buildings and the overall campus. In addition, pedestrian trails that loop throughout the campus will eventually tie into a trail system planned for the surrounding community. Casual seating, plaza and courtyard areas lend themselves to use as outdoor classrooms. |
