Dahl Playfield

Seattle. WA

Located in the Wedgwood neighborhood of north Seattle, the Waldo J. Dahl Playfield has been enjoyed by users of all ages for over fifty years. The 14.8 acre park which features 4 ballfields, a children’s play area, wading pool, basketball court, soft surface perimeter path and an open meadow, was in need of an upgrade. The basis of the design was formed from two primary elements reflecting the natural history of the area; bogs and glacial erratics. Utilizing large boulders and re-used granite curbing, a drainage swale connects the playground to a restored portion of the underlying bog. Surrounding the bog is a boulder wash field created by artist John Hoge. Ruby red and gray granite boulders recall the glacial erratics reflective of the park’s underlying geology. Other improvements include upgrades to the basketball court, site furnishings, paths, an ADA ramp into the wading pool, and cosmetic upgrades to the community / restroom building.
