Located on Baranoff Island in Alaska’s western coastal region, Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital provides regional care to Alaskan Native communities and serves as a Critical Access Hospital. Surrounded by spectacular mountains and established upland forests, the site for the new hospital, located within the town of Sitka, affords breathtaking views and unparalleled access to nature. The new facility will provide expanded capacity and support the projected needs of the communities served by SEARHC into the future. The campus will also include a long term care facility, as well as new staff quarters.
The site presents a wide range of ecological zones, with dramatic topographic changes, rock outcroppings, wetlands, and forested areas. The design will integrate nature into restorative outdoor spaces for staff, patients, and visitors. The established native Sitka and Hemlock forest will be preserved and innovative green stormwater solutions will be implemented to treat runoff on site.
